This is a modern saga of the sea: a woman and three men- none with deep-sea experience- sailing a small yacht ten thousand miles to the South Seas and back.

As the Aikane set out from California, Janet assumed the same duties and responsibilities as the men. She hauled sail, stood watch, learned to shoot the sun (and the moon), shared the suspense of mast-cracking winds, dangerous passages through coral reefs, and hidden harbor entrances. When new foods came her way, she invented dishes- the recipes for which are included in this book.

It has practical value for all who plan or hope to go cruising. There are lists of stores (food, drugs, and other supplies), detailed menus, tips for shipboard living. One can learn from the mistakes of the Aikane crew, and prepare for the psychological pains of cabin fever, But these are just the extras.

Basic is the pull of sail, curving against the continuous horizon, drawing four human beings on to meet the challenge of wind and storm, to share the special camaraderie of high adventure, to find answers to compelling questions of their lives.
