The Artist's Views of Astoria, the Lower Columbia and the Coast.

From the back cover-
As an engineer with the Coast Survey for 36 years and an artist throughout his life, Cleveland Rockwell (1837-1907) captured the world he witnessed in sketches, watercolor, and oil. Collected here are some of his most dramatic works showing the lower Columbia River and the coast with attention to detail and accuracy of rendering like no other. He gives us a first-hand look at the region before photography was readily available, and captures the magical play of light on water as a stage for the daily actions of humans going about their lives in this wonderous setting.

Foreward by Samuel Johnson, Executive Director CRMM
Introduction by Len Braarud, Guest Curator

This was the companion book to the 2011 Special Exhibit of C. Rockwell's original paintings and sketches at CRMM. Many of these pieces are rarely seen by the public, being held in private collections throughout the nation, but are cataloged in beautiful full color in this volume.
